Wine Buy for Passover

Batasiolo Nebbiolo 1998 from Langhe, in Piedmont, Italy, is one of the new kosher imports. It is marked kosher for Passover (and Mevushal), as well, but, says Food Talk sommelier Carol Berman, it's fragrant bouquet and harmonious balance and flavors, should be pleasing all through the year.

Nebbiolo is, by the way, the grape that is the highly acclaimed as the noblest red wine grape of Italy. It is the grape used for Barolo and Barbaresco, which are place names, and in this kosher example you can taste the same cherry and tar, guts and glory character that has made those wines famous. This wine, however, is softer and is drinkable at a younger age. This 1998 is very attractive now, but can easily be cellared for a couple of years.

At approximately $17.99 a bottle, this is a very good value, as even lesser Barolo and Barbaresco usually sell for $40 to $50.

A perfect brisket wine!
